A Writing Journey

Following somebody else’s rules on writing isn’t going to make you better. Sure, read all you can about developing your skills and go ahead and read those (arbitrary) rules. But take them with a grain of salt. Writing is creative. Writing is subjective. Just because you din’t follow the rules doesn’t mean you are a bad writer. The people who make rules for writing base those rules on what they write. Be unique.

Take care, fellow travelers.

Comments on: "What’s up With all the Rules?" (6)

  1. Hi there; I recently posted a blog post on exactly this 😉 http://pippadacosta.wordpress.com/2013/08/26/advice-the-party-killer/

As a newbie to professional writing the rules completely swamped me, until I chose to ignore them.

    • Just read your post and I think we are definitely on the same page. Your right, following all of the rules stifles creativity and makes manuscripts wooden. Thanks for sharing!
      Take care,

  2. But… isn’t “be unique” a rule? What if I don’t want to be unique? Is it okay to break the rule that says I shouldn’t follow rules?

    I’m so confused.

    • Haha, yes, you can break the rule and not be unique, if you want! Be true to yourself, even if that means going with the flow. I would really say “be true to yourself” is a better “rule” than “be unique.” Like you imply, not everyone wants to be unique.
      Take care,
