A Writing Journey

I tried NaNoWriMo last year. I got about two pages in and I quit. I believe this was due, in large part, to being unprepared. For that reason, I’m going to do more prep work this year – because I’m taking another shot at NaNo*.

Coming up in October, I will be posting a series of things to do to prepare. Some of them are obvious, some serious, and some just silly. That’s why the “slightly comedic.” They won’t be posted in any sort of specific order, except that the things you might need more time for I’m going to post towards the beginning of October.

Hope to see you preparing as well!

*No, I have never completed NaNo, and only tried it once. You may remember, deadlines terrify me.

  1. NaNoWriMo is a beast unlike any other. On the one hand, it makes you all excited to tackle such a crazy thing and connect with other writers. However, it also sometimes makes you feel like this is impossible and I suck as a writer, so why did I sign up for this?

I’ve been doing NaNo every year since 2008 except for 2014. Somehow I won every year except 2013. I think the biggest thing is to not be afraid to break some rules. If you don’t like your story, try something else. Don’t be afraid to ignore that inner editor. Write whatever comes to mind because the first draft doesn’t have to be pretty or even make sense. Just get your ideas out; you’ll be surprised what treasures can be hidden in a pile of rubbish.

Do you have your idea yet? I’m torn between several, so I might just work on them all, lol.
