A Writing Journey

It’s Called Fiction for a Reason

I’ve always been worried about what other people will think. I try not to be, but in the end, I am. When it comes to writing, that worry only gets worse. I ask myself questions like “will people think this is a reflection of me” and “will they assume that everything I write is rooted in some truth?” Those questions are doom for a writer. They will destroy your courage to share what you write, they will destroy your love of writing.

Fear of what others may (or may not) think about my writing is pointless. I am going to write it, I am going to send it to publishers until someone accepts it. People are going to have to read what I write if I am indeed to be a published author. I can’t worry about what people will think. If they assume that there is reality in every scene of my novel then that is their issue – it’s called fiction for a reason.

Perhaps my fears have no basis – I never read a book and wonder how much of it was pulled from real experiences. I think what the fear stems from is judgment, and being judged based on what I write. After all, look at all the horrible things said about authors these days. It is completely unfair. I don’t care if I didn’t like the book or if it was poorly written – authors put themselves out their, knowing that people may not like them. Writers put a lot of work into their stories – I would argue more work than a typical 9-5 job, just because writers never stop working in their heads. (Of course, I’ve never had a 9-5 job so I could be very wrong.)

The point is that fiction is fiction, and writers shouldn’t have to fear the judgement of others. We shouldn’t have to wonder what questions could be asked, we shouldn’t have to worry about hateful rants against us. It’s like people always say: “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”

Take care, fellow travelers.
