Friday Inspiration – Plunge In

This past week, my job coordinating summer programs for my church began. We started right away with off-site vbs, a lunch program, and activities for a different age group each day. I chose to begin programs this week to jump right in and start with the most hectic schedule. And let me tell you – it is hectic. But now I know the routine of it, so the next few weeks won’t be so overwhelming.  I plunged in to something unfamiliar and hoped I would do things right.

I’ve done this throughout my life. When I was a kid learning how to swim, I was terrified to go in the deep end – but we  were required to jump off the diving board for swimming class. So I put on my brave face and jumped in. When I went to college, I went a week early to go on a hiking trip with a bunch of strangers – two of which became some of my best friends.

Plunging in to unknown situations is the best way to experience the world, and meet knew people. Writing is a lot like this. I know a lot of people say you should plan out the whole story and do all your research before writing – but I disagree. You never know where an event will take your characters until you’re writing. You never expect to have to research aura-reading or how to make powdered ink until the story is on the page. Planning is great, but at some point you have to stop planning and start writing.

So start writing, or keep writing (or do whatever it is you need to get done!).

Do you find “plunging in” to be helpful?

Take care, fellow travelers.
